I've had two coats. One had a soft open (no undercoat) coat. The other had a long "stock" coat -- meaning a harsh outer coat with an undercoat. This is the type of long coat that is now allowed in the SV ring. I will never own another dog with the soft open coat. As Carolyn pointed out, he was constantly getting burrs, twigs, leaves, whatever caught up and tangled in his coat. His coat was like a dust mop too! Not to mention the ice balls I had to cut out after we hiked during the winter. I never had any of those problems with the long stock coated dog. The maintenance of her coat was about the same as a normal plush coat. The only thing I had be to vigilant about was making sure she didn't get mats behind her ears. That was it. She never got stuff tangled in her coat at all. I was able to brush burrs and stuff out of her coat easily.
