Here is a good example of why people are leaving the GSD conformation
showing. I judged a show recently, took my WB to BOB and then gave her a
Group
1. She finished shortly thereafter winning back to back specialty shows. I
was told by the owner of the Sire of the BOB bitch that everyone at
ringside was saying I put up a pet. GOOD SPORTMANSHIP!!! The worse part is
even
tho he was the owner of the Sire he blasted me for putting her up saying she
was a pet.

I have been saying this for years. The main difference between the German
style ring and the Specialty ring is the young people attending the German
style shows.
We are in the last days of the specialty shows.

in one word...."FUN"...It's no longer "fun" for the new person.
They rarely win, it costs money, people are not friendly, and
the whole experience is not a good one. Why return? They
don't. The breeder of their "show dog" talks badly about the
other breeders and their dogs, rarely risks a good one on a
novice, and negativity abounds around the ring.
In Schutzhund, they welcome and make newcomers a part of
the event. They give all entries ribbons and everyone is smiling.
They offer FRIENDLY advice, they have a beer fest and food
and it's a party, and it's a family fun day....enjoyable! When I
went, people talked to me and explained what was happening
in an effort to both educate and invite me back not having a clue
as to my involvement in dogs or not. I was made to want to
return.............we have a lot to learn. If we want our conformation
ring to survive and we want more than 4 dogs for a Major with
only superior dogs exhibited in National competition, big changes
need to be made. It is not about "us" and our ego's, but about
German Shepherd's and their future! Helen Franklin
