I had a litter of 7 in January--noticed that one puppy had a flat chest. I put an egg crate mattress in the whelping box and rolled towels that I taped together with adhesive tape. It was pretty lumpy but the puppy did well and it didn't seem to bother mom. I did this in staed of taping the front legs together.
