My first bitch was one of the "too smart for my own good" types. She could open any door or gate, and took her babies out to show them the neighborhood when they were about 5 weeks old. But she really proved her brains and problem-solving ability to me one day. She hated moving water, and would even put her paw in the water bowl to make sure it didn't move when she was drinking, and even though my dog loved water from the hose, she would run away from it, or from the tap in the tub when I took a shower. One day, however, I heard her barking in the master bathroom, in a funny yippy kind of way. I went up to see what was going on. She was standing at the tub with her paw on the faucet handle, trying to push it on, and yipping when it wouldn't turn on for her - totally out of character for her. So I turned the water on, and she started drinking. After a few laps, she backed off of the tub, I shut off the water, and then she grabbed my sleeve, led me downstairs to her water bowl, and indicated that I should look and see that the bowl was empty!! I had blown it and not filled it on time!! That was the last time I didn't check any water bowl I passed.
