I see a lot of Pit Bulls with their tails wagging at everyone all day long.
It appears
to be very benign wagging at everything and everyone. I experienced what
bothers
me about that while at the river with a dog a few years ago.
A happy happy beautiful fawn colored adult Pit Bull playing happily with it's
own
family and two of their kids retrieving and playing in the water.
It spotted me sitting with an 8 month old GSD about 150 feet away....stopped and
stared at us...stiffened and started towards us with "that look". The owners
started
calling it and it did not respond but continued towards me with that stiff
legged "look".
Owners continued to call and coerce...dog did not listen but was "locked into"
me
sitting in the sand chair.
Watching all this unfold....as he got closer I picked up a big rock and
prepared myself
for what was coming and as I started to stand up.....the 8 mos. old GSD laying
beside
me saw the Pit Bull and stood up and ROARED at it.....the dog
startled...'snapped out'
of it's aggressive trance-like approach and finally turned and responded to the
owners
and went to them. WHEW!!!
I personally think what has been bred into them is often just below that thin
surface and
once they go into that 'mode'.......they are hard to bring back at the moment.
I do not
see it as a protective or provoked behavior......but just something always
there that
can surface.
ALL of the attacks by P.B's I know of are ALL unprovoked....... and never
protective.....

the big difference is a GSD bite is like a car crash....a p it bull bite is
like a plane crash...I came real close to shooting one about 20 years ago while
checking up on one of my parolees.....a few years ago
in San Jose my blind ex-wife and her guide dog Woodson were attacked by a pit
bull...thank God for the by-standers that came to her aid.....it could have
been a real bad seen.....these dogs always seem to be in the hands of owners
that should not have them....Ed

I find this whole conversation ironic. Not hard to say the exact same thing
about GSDs.
