I know I'll be sorry I got into this....because someone will take offense and
think they have to
tell me about some sweet adorable Pit Bull somewhere. Â I already know of a
few, and one
is often at our West Coast shows........but I am speaking in
"generalities"...and we need
to admit to a problem before we can SOLVE a problem! Â
You can worry that it is "sterotyping" for Pit Bulls if you want.......but
let's be honest here.
Pit Bulls were bred to kill! Â Â They were bred to be aggressive enough to
kill another dog
for no real reason.
If you can bear to watch the video of it..... the dogs are wagging their tails
ALL THE TIME
they are fighting.... whether BEING killed... or killing! Â They are in their
mode of what they
were bred for. Â Â They were bred to kill in the pits as Ken said.....a LONG
LONG TIME
before AKC.
To compare to the temperament problems in a GSD is not the same. Â THIS Breed
was
bred to herd and protect....to be watchful, protective ....aggressive only when
necessary.
But it was never bred for generations to KILL anything. Â
Any animal that has to hunt prey to survive is capable of killing....but it is
not bred into
the very nature of the working drive of a GSD. Â Â That WAS the WORK of the
Pit Bull!
That was the basis for the beginning of the Breed. Â If they did not kill the
other dog they
were throwaways.
YEP there are problems with our GSD. Â Generally speaking it is fear. Â Fear
biting is a big
problem in itself....but usually it is a horrendous quick bite and they are
gone. Â They do not
hang around for the kill. Â ( there are exceptions to every
rule....again....this is a generality )
Problems with our GSD is that they were bred for many things....solid calm
friendly family
dogs with a great sense of humor....herding dogs, watchful alert protection
..and yes.....even
for attack work on command. Â Â
It's a complex temperament that must fit all molds....and some do not, and some
are not even
capable of most of it!! Â Part of the problem is that many do not understand
what a calm
confident watchful dog is.... friendly, Â but aware of all it's surroundings
all the time and tough
enough to stand it's ground when necessary.
Many want a soft "needy" dog.... because they think it "loves it's Mommy"
 more.  ? Â
Many make excuses for fear or aggression.....and therein lies the problem for
the GSD.
A broad spectrum of weak....... to overly aggressive......but not calm, solid
tough dogs.
Just my opinion.....
