I've stayed mostly out of this conversation, but just as
an FYI, I feel the need to point out that white boxers are
usually NOT albinos! They are white for the exact same
reason my English setters and a whole bunch of other
breeds that occur in white base color are white: the
effects of the extreme white spotting gene. This is not
the same masking gene that turns a GSD white either, as
'S' (spotting) is part of a completely different gene
series. Also, extreme white spotting is associated with
deafness which does not seem to occur in white GSDs.
On the other hand, white Dobes are, indeed, at least
partially albinoid.
I understand Barb was referring to 'way back' when people
had some rather strange ideas about genetics. I just
wanted to point out that there are different types of
"white" in dogs and they are not all the same.
