I can certainly sympathize with handlers and schedules, but for many who attend
the National, it is their vacation, and an opportunity to see dogs that they
have only seen in pictures, and people they only talk to on the list. I love
the Parade of Great Dogs, and would gladly stay after show classes to watch it.
I feel the same about the Stud Dog and Brood Bitch classes, though I think
limiting the number of progeny in those classes is necessary.
I think the National should be for everyone, and I have no objection to seeing
extra events in the middle of the day. Not interested? Go have lunch. I
don't think that Specials should be after an event that is lengthy, as this is
really the highlight of the National Specialty. Kathy is right. People will
stay to see the events they care about, and the others can go tend dogs and
relax a bit.

Back in 1973, there were no puppy classes at the National in Seattle. What a
lot of complaints there were!! This was the year when the Covy Tucker Hill
Spice litter was born, and they had to enter them in the adult classes. I must
say they did pretty well, in spite of being the class babies. The Parade that
year had in it CH. Falko v Celler Schloss. I think he was 13, and looked
absolutely fabulous. I had a grandson of his, and was so thrilled to see him up
close and personal.

I don't think an answer is cutting events. I think scheduling events properly
can be a big plus. We can offer all the things we go to the National to see,
and still have it run on a convenient schedule for exhibitors and handlers. And
perhaps nothing but the opening ceremony and Specials should be scheduled on
Saturday.

We have created the long National ourselves, by insisting that everything the
German Shepherd Dog can do be at this show. In the old days, it was just
Conformation and Obedience. Now look at what can be seen! Those events plus
Herding, Agility, the WDA competition, and what'll you bet we will offer Rally
pretty soon? There is no way the National is "just another dog show". I for
one, like it that way! Doris
