Excellent post, Jeff! I was just on the phone with a friend, who happens to be a judge, and she said the same thing that you said in your post. Although you are correct, that the purpose of AKC dog shows is to promote the breeding of purebred dogs who fit the standard for each breed, a judge should not take this into account when judging. I do not believe our standard or their judging guidelines require an animal to be fertile in order to win an AKC show. Now, that being said I do believe that especially for a male, eventually this would become a factor whether it should or shouldn't. If it were to become common knowledge that a specific male was sterile, I am certain at least some judges would find it impossible not to consider this. It's probably easier for a bitch who lacks fertility. In fact, some of our most beautiful top winning bitches have unfortunately ended up not ever having puppies. But at the end of the day AKC does not require those who show to breed their dogs. So, what would the difference be of a male who has been bred several times with no successful litter produced versus an owner of a show dog who just wants to show their dog and not breed him. You would never know whether or not that male can produce or not. In our breed we have a couple of dogs who are being campaigned that cannot roduce puppies. Consider the fact of what dog shows were for, how would you eel about this if you lost to one of those dogs - better dog or not?.... If you were a breeder judge and confronted with this dog in your ring (and you new about the situation of not being able to produce puppies), would that inder your choices at all. Yes, I understand you are supposed to judge the dogs s you see them, but think about it from a breeder's point of view. The eye opener for us was at DCA. We were first Award of Merit behind a dog who supposedly" cannot sire puppies (he missed three bitches and suddenly was not t public stud). When we got our photos, I mentioned that Argus had won the Stud og Class again this year and his daughter was BIF. Well, after I got off the latform, the judge asked our President what the breed dog had produced and how is kids had done at DCA. She essentially told the judge that he had no uppies.. SURPRISE!!!! Just something to discuss...
