When I sent Barbara the links about tail chasing they indicated that it can be
caused by several differed things - it can be caused by a learned behavior,
obsessive compulsive behavior, caused by medical
problems or perhaps caused by a combination. There was also mention of
Clomipramine which has been found effective in some obsessive compulsive

He's always had full anal glands and last year he had an anal gland infection
with bleeding that wouldn't clear up. We ended up taking him to Med-Vet in
Columbus where a specialist removed his anal glands, we were worried it might
the perianal fistula, which is was not.
Since the surgery, he hasn't chased his tail. I'm not saying this is a cure,
but all these years my dog may have had irritation from his anal glands.
Since my dog had this, there are probably many other dogs that may have this
problem.
