I have said before, and pointed out to new people, the great time to be had
Friday evening. That is when traditionally they open up the ring to anyone
who wants to go in to work out the dogs.
You get to see all these great champions, without grooming, with handlers,
owners, and friends all together, not competing but just working the dogs. It
is great fun to go down into the ring and walk around, petting the stars you
have heard about, (and the dogs too), looking close at the dogs you wanted
to see, and watching to see what the handlers and owners are doing to get
ready.
I remember years back Tedi and I took our champion, (it may have been Ben)
into the ring. The purpose was to see if I could still get around the ring. I
decided that if I could do five times, (not all at once) I would show on
Saturday.
I went around one time, and it was fine. So, I tried it two times around. I
was breathing hard, but was OK. So then I did it again, and yet again.
I went back to the room realizing that I could do five times and survive. As
I lay there thinking about the next day, I realized, yes, I could do five
trips around the ring, BUT NOT TWO DAYS IN A ROW!
We do have those chances to learn, and everyone should try not to miss the
Friday Night Free For All. It is the ultimate social time at the National.
