Thanks Peggy for sending that on to the list. This is also something to
think about when we are looking for new ways to publicize our breed. I'm not
saying that we shouldn't because heaven knows we need some youngsters, however,
the down side is that when a breed is made to look like the perfect breed,
EVERYONE wants one.
Peggy can attest to what happened when Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were
featured, I think 2 years ago, at Westminster. Suddenly, everyone wanted one.
Breeders received more than 10X greater calls from people. Dalmatian breeders
can speak to what happened to Dals after the Disney movies. Reputable
breeders cannot supply healthy, sound dogs at the increased rate and once most
of
these people decide they want one of the "Superstar" breeds they will find them
wherever they can. Often those will be the mill breeders who will step up
production of the desired breed. Yes, the mills prefer the smaller breeds in
the
main, but they will crank into production of large breeds if the demand, even
short term, will make them a buck.
The suggestions regarding Animal Planet or other publicity programs are good.
The Parent Club and RESPONSIBLE breeders just need to be ready to respond
with an appropriate education program.
