Mistakes are often made, and hopefully corrected.
I ran into this years ago.
There was a statue given to the top Junior Handler who sent in his or her
information each year. I was even in charge one time to accumulate the
information for the club.
After someone won, I think it was Amy Friedberg, the club told her mother
that they were not going to give it that year. Amy's mother was told to
tell her daughter life is rough and to deal with it and grow up.
I contacted the person in charge and told her the club could not advertise
the award all year, and then just decide not to give it. Then I contacted
the artist who provided the statue, and was told the club had not paid her,
so she wasn't going to give them the statue until she was paid.
I got it resolved and Amy got the statue. But, for years I was referred to
as "the scum-bag attorney from the West Coast". She and I eventually
became good friends, but being an attorney and representing people in the club
or on the board does bring with it an amount of grief.
In the most recent incident with Helen, I was called in a letter from the
club's attorney to the board, "A terrible attorney and a liar." Now I am
being threatened by a board member that I have to remain silent and not post
about it. I was also told that my posts caused the problem, and had I
never said anything, it would never have gone to a hearing.
I have been asked at different times to represent 7 or 8 different board
member while they were on the board. All were to protect them against the
board. All were resolved.
When a board member tells me directly to "Shut Up" as just happened, they
should know better.
Things as to Helen have been resolved. I have heard from board members not
including my client, and we can rest easy, the board did the best they
could, and our faith in them is again substantiated.
Again, we owe a debt of gratitude to those who serve, and even when we
don't agree, we should recognize how hard they try to do the right thing.
Now after my "EdRant", let's hope they take care of the ribbon-gate issue.
