Peggy;

As you know in other breeds, at the National level, they usually only give
Select/Award of Merit designations to 10% of the Specials entered, PERIOD. Do
we really believe the depth of quality in our breed at our National is so
significantly superior to breeds such as Golden Retrievers, Labrador
Retrievers, Doberman Pinschers, Pembroke Welsh Corgis or any of the other
breeds that do adhere to this formula and only award it to the truly
outstanding as to justify unlimited Selects?

I think that in other breeds the Award of Merit is much the same as our
Select...at least I think they intended it to be so. In other words, Selects
and Awards of Merit mean that these were the ones who pushed hard for the Breed
win...and who were in it until the end. I don't see the point in having
Selects AND Awards of Merit....seems silly to me.
Unless, of course, the Award of Merit means you're giving some kind of
rewards to your friends...........what other reason could there be?

The actual motion that I made on Sunday was to start discussion on the Select
issue for the next meeting. The actual motion was to allow the judge to award
"Select" only to 10% of the Best of Breed entry as entered and irrespective of
sex and to further allow the judge to present "Award of Merit" awards, up to 10
in each sex, to the other animals that were, in the judge's opinion, of
meritorious quality.

The Select award was created by the GSDCA to acknowledge those animals that in
the judge's opinion were of close to equal quality to the Best of Breed and
Best of Opposite.
Select animals should be of such outstanding quality, that on any other given
day, they could have won the top award. While we all may think our animals fit
that category, in reality there are only a few that do. This award should be
for those 'select' few, but by creating an 'award of merit' we are allowing
the judge to acknowledge up to 20 more animals that they felt were of
exceptional quality or potential.

With this two-tiered approach, we are not limiting the judge as much as
expanding it while not deluting the best-of-the-best award. Also, the AKC
limits a judge to pick the best animal when they have to pick Best of Breed.
Are we next going to approach the AKC and say "Our breed is of such outstanding
depth of quality, we need to be allowed to let our judges topick more than one
Best of Breed? When a judge judges, they have to make some hard decisions.
Limiting our "Select" award to 10% of the entry MAKES the cream rise to the
top. Creating the "Award of Merit" allows the judge the latitutde to say,
these dogs may not be equal to the Grand Victor or Grand Victrix, but are of
such outstanding quality, they deserve recognition.

It could be a "Win -Win" proposition for the club, the judge, the exhibitor and
the Breed.

There are a few very very vocal people who do not like the limits on selects.
I for one think it's a good idea. The title of select should be held in high
esteem. Not tossed around like so much paper. But if the MAJORITY of the
membership wanted no limit I could live with that. I could not live with it if
a few persistent people swayed the board.
