Hi all! Those of you in AZ, save this email in case you ever NEED the info!
EAR HEMATOMA or EAR INJURIES
Recommendation for Dr. Richard Stolper of Scottsdale Ranch Animal Hospital
(Shea & 96st St) for ear hematoma surgery & post-surgical care

Successful surgery and post-op restorative bandaging & taping/rechecks. We
now have a beautiful 100% upright GSD ear again to match her other
beautiful ear.

Surgery is absolutely guaranteed curative for life of dog, as Dr. Stolper
promises any repeat hematoma/second surgery ever needed on the same ear
will be FREE. Amazing.

Details --

Restoration -- Dr. Stolper used a variety of materials post-op to ensure
her injured ear went back up & in correct ear set/position as it healed,
including XRay film, teflon padding, surgical tape, athletic bandaging, and
styrofoam cups -- and he took into consideration the tips Carolyn Martello
so graciously shared from her knowledge/experience (Thank you, Carolyn!).
Thrilled with the results & his care for this dog.

Causes --This hematoma was a freak occurrence out of nowhere, absent any
ear infection or hx, and could have resulted from a hard head shake or
hitting it with her hind paw & nails when scratching her neck. Per vet, 50%
of these seem to result from ear infection; among the other 50%, he often
suspects auto immune (some genetic impairment) related.

A few things learned, cost savings related to pass on . . . should you ever
deal with this:

1)MAINLY . . . Dr. Stolper in AZ for the guarantee (or find the same)

2)AND . . . You might want to skip trying to treat this by lancing and go
straight to (guaranteed) surgery. It's widely reported not very successful,
as the ear just refills with fluid. Savings: $75-85

3)Pre-op safety blood work. I did it just to be safe, as I had no baseline
recent blood work. If you do & your dog is healthy & young, your call . .
. $59

4)Get the post-op Cephalexin from Target for $4 vs from vet clinic, and if
possible other take home pain meds.
