A good trainer can go to the local shelter and find a mix breed and train
it to do all the requirements. Who is the authority to pick and choose
which
DQ does not matter??
We are not talking about not allowing a dog to compete and train for
titles....but for one the HIGHEST awards at a NATIONAL that represents our
Breed. IMO.
I choose this Breed because of what the Standard requires it to be....it
pleases me.
MOST of what we 'look' at does not have anything to do with the dogs
ability
to work.........NOR the owners ability to train. For it to BE a GSD we
assume it has
the ability to work. That is what the Breed is! IMO. When we lose
that....we lose
the German Shepherd Dog.
When some of it no longer matters........neither will the German Shepherd
Dog!
Unlike Evan, I really do not post here very often.
However, I have a very strong feeling on this subject. IF A DOG HAS A DQ
FAULT according to OUR STANDARD they should not be allowed a major award.
That is not to say they can't compete at any show. They just can not
receive a major award.
That includes at any show. National or local. Give them their ribbons,
but, no points toward any AKC (unless it is one of their mixed breed awards)
or Parent Club award.
As I told someone I showed dogs for a few years ago, the only thing he could
see was movememt, IF THEY DON'T LOOK LIKE A GSD, THEY ARE NOT A GSD.

Absolutely! If the dog is a properly registered AKC GSD (I
would personally include ILP dogs as well, but...) and
does the required work, it should be eligible for the club
award. Haven't we created enough red-headed performance
step-children in this club/breed? You mention docked
tails. Well what about the dog who needed its tail
amputated because of an accident or to save its life? What
does the lack of a tail (or part thereof) have to do with
a dog's ability to work?? Performance events are about the
quality and preciseness of the work and the team effort
between handler and dog, so I feel that is all that should
be judged where awards are concerned. <shrugs>
