Now, now folks... I need to talk to you a little here! The old man
sometimes is off in left field, but sometimes needs to be heard!
Years ago, a friends on the police department took over a department
as chief of police. It was a small community, out in the desert and
they had been through four chiefs in less than three years. Each had
gone into the community to straighten it out. Each got crucified.
So my friend asked what he should do to make a difference in this
terrible situation. My response sort of stunned him for a few minutes,
then he started laughing and set out to do it. I simply asked if he
remembered the Mayberry episode in which Andy took the angry business
man home who had stole his patrol car so he could get to his very
important appointment, rather than taking him to jail? He did remember
and laughed about it. I simply told him that he was going into a rural
setting where everyone who lived there was related, and they had more
history than he could create in a few months, so he would be better
off not trying. Best to not try to straighten out the town, just let
it be. There is the official law that they have rejected and the
unofficial law that they administer to themselves. Best thing one
could do was to take off your gun, lock it in the trunk of the police
car and play basket ball with the kids. The role of being officious
will not work in that setting, but the role of father might.
That is when he started laughing, thanked me and went to work. Allen
lasted many years as their chief of police and although he has gone on
to bigger and better things, the community still honors him as a
leader that brought them together and stopped crime in their streets.
He did it by modeling his efforts after Mayberry RFD - PD!
There are official avenues to handle things and there are unofficial
channels of handling things. After serving in and around law
enforcement all of my life, I am not convinced that the official
avenues are always best. I'm sort of with Doris here, these guys are
friends, they are passionate and the more we back off and let them
deal with it the better will be the end result.
The only problem I see is that Barney has already heard about it and
is reaching for his bullet to load his gun. Come on Barn' let's go on
down to the lake and see if the fish are biting. When we get back, I
guarantee you everything will be settled down and we can go one
showing our dogs. If the AKC does show up, we'll take them fishin'
also and take them on to Aunt Tedi's for some pie and ice-cream.
They'll get the picture.
You know, cops don't always like to do official stuff when there are
better solutions.
