To be fair about it, as recently as November of 2004, only
about 4 percent of the ***53,000*** animals that entered
the pound yearly -- nearly nine of every 10 animals --
were killed (yes, by gassing), many within mere hours of
arriving... more per capita than any other major American
city. Included in that statistic were ALL puppies and
kittens under 4 months of age and virtually all
owner-surrendered animals. And while many other shelters
aggressively promote adoption, the vast majority of
animals that entered the San Antonio Animal Care and
Control facility were put to their deaths without ever
having been viewed by prospective owners. Adoption
kennels often sat empty for days at a time. Meanwhile,
Miami placed animals in new homes at a rate five times
that of San Antonio; Dallas at twice the rate!
Some pretty sad statistics indeed... :(
Even though San Antonio may be going about it in the
wrong way, please at least understand that they were
trying to bring their shelter system literally out of the
dark ages of death. So I'd personally be willing to cut
them a little bit of slack for the effort. JMHO as always.
