I think Barbara touches on a very interesting point that I've had
discussion with several of my friends with.
The public's perception of the American Line German Shepherd is not good, but I
belive it's due to great marketing skills the German Line breeders are using.
Having a couple of breeders in my area that breed the German dogs I hear things
that are said about our American dogs, and it is NOT flattering. So the
individual looking for a puppy that get's a hold of a breeder that has nothing
good to say about the American dogs, will shy away from even looking at them.
This is not just bad mouthing, this is fact. Researching and going on some of
the websites prooves this as well. So the key is marketing and visibility.
I often receive calls after Westminster & Eukanuba, people telling me they want
a dog that looks like the GSD winner. They don't care if it is a German or
American bred dog at that time. Most do not have a clue about the difference,
that comes later, when they get a hold of breeders and start looking for a
dog. I am NOT trying to start a German vs American war here, what I'm trying
to say is that we, as American Line Show breeders, do not do enough in the
marketing department of our great breed. So the lack of interest and downturn
in showing is partly do to that as well. There is not just one single factor,
it is an accumulation of several valid factors.
So anything the individual person along with the GSDCA can do to help promote
our dogs is a good thing, that is JMO.

I feel that the German Shepherd entry has been going down for years..I feel
considering where it is this year we drew a good entry..So many who have dogs
could not fly them because the airlines using smaller planes..PEOPLE are buying
German shepherds but want the German dogs they are tougher and they like the
German sv shows better..They draw HUGE entries.So the economy is not the
reason..The American style conformation show is not that popular anymore..Just
a FACT..Notice the German dogs all look similar in type...All have good heads
excellant underjaws..Our dogs are all diferent some tall some short legged some
long some cobby..No consistancy of type..Yes german shepherds are still VERY
POPULAR just not in the American conformation ring..Barbara Amidon living
