The comments I hear are that the American shepherds look deformed. The general
public does not like the sloping rear and I don't blame them. Isn't there
something in the standard about having a level back during movement? They look
on the current crop of show dogs as being crippled in the rear and they don't
want that. Our breed has changed over the years to become a beautiful side
gaiter but at what cost. More and more people are looking to get German line
dogs or even a dog from a backyard breeder rather than one from current show
lines.
If I had tons of money and was still showing shepherds, I would not miss a
national. I would be driving to Utah to enjoy it. It would take a few days
from South Carolina. I have driven twice to the Dallas area for Tibetan
Spaniel Nationals and up to the Baltimore, MD area. I did fly to Oregon two
years ago but it is easy to take one small breed dog in the cabin.
