I agree with Fred that not enough study has been done on swimmers OR megaesophagus. Until we know how and when defects are inherited it's pretty hard to breed accordingly. I've asked vets about the swimmer syndrome and they don't have a concrete answer either. Sometimes it seems that there is more they DON'T know than what they DO know.
