Though I am one who firmly believes that a long coat can often produce superior
progeny,
the reason it is a fault is due to texture. The texture of the coat of a long
coated GS is not
like that of a collie, old English, Sheltie, etc. Also the coats of these
breeds are determined
by the environment of the regions in which they work. The long coat of a GS is
a grooming
problem where there should be no grooming problem in our breed. It used to be
that GSs
went into the ring with hardly any "grooming", simply clean and maybe a quick
slick of a
brush, no blowing and back-brushing. It truly amazes me hat so many today
literally render
their dog's coat incorrect with gobs of product.

Well let's think about it. Our Standard evolved from the German Standard and
the fathers of their Standard emphasized the importance of function of all
parts of the dog even coat.
Apparently, the fathers of those other breeds did not.
