Exactly right. GREAT post Ruth.
As the Breed improved from what the Captain started with, and
the Standard for our Breed was developed and improved upon,
some of the undesirable characteristics were properly and
purposely faulted in an effort to eliminate them.
With any common sense at all, we shouldn't go backwards and
bring them back as that would be taking the Breed 'backward'.
EVEN the name of the Breed evolved and changed....so By the
same theory of being "in the DNA" we could go backwards in a
lot more ways than the white color.........
There is a whole array of DNA in the GSD.

The argument for whites is that whites have always been part of the GSD
dna. Well, using that logic so were wire coats, floppy ears, soft coats and
square proportions.
The idea of a breed is to create something that comes closer and closer to
the ideal - none of those traits above were ever desired as ideal.
You CANNOT have a breed that is the most popular breed in the world and
decide that in our small part of it, we are going to bring back all those
early undesirable traits just because it might increase club membership.
That means we are actually creating our own breed.
