The AKC now offes an amateur class

This should be considered in the specialty shows

As for the Amateur Futurity, I think it might be a financial drain on host
clubs at this time. it was
a pilot program that expired 2009 and the Board never voted to keep it.
However, in Jult they did
vote to make it mandatory and perhaps this needs to be reconsidered. However,
the Board
needs to hear your FEELINGS directly, not through ANY LIST.

I read over the rules of the Amateur Futurity and was surprised to learn that
pros become
amateurs after one year. I doubt seriously that anyone who was a pro would
after a year, not be
able to beat any amateur. Food for thought.

Professional Handlers: Definition

A rule as set forth by AKC in Chapter 2, section 11, allows clubs to limit
participation of
professional handlers. For the purpose of the Amateur Futurity/Maturity
the following
    rules will apply.
· One who has a rate card, or one who has accepted compensation of any kind
for
handling, or who conditions and/or trains dogs for others, within one (1)
year of the
scheduled date of the Amateur, will be considered a Professional Handler
· No one shall handle in the Amateur classes who is a member of the immediate
household of a professional handler, conditioner, or trainer of other?s
dogs within the
    one year time frame.
· An AKC licensed judges or provisional judges may not handle in the Amateur
Classes of the Futurity/Maturity, unless they are an owner of the dog they
show.
They may not act as a handler for anyone else.
· The rules applying to Junior Handlers as set forth by the American Kennel
Club
shall also be applicable to the Amateur Futurity Venue.
· Juniors as defined by AKC will be allowed to handle in the Amateur classes,
regardless of those residing thesame household of someone defined as
    Professional
· An individual who trains and conditions dogs for others, but who is
otherwise not a
"Professional Handler" nor has ever been a "Profession Handler" may handle
in the
Amateur Classes if the are the breeder or in the family of the breeder of
record of
    the dog showed.
To be eligible to handle in the Amateur Classes, one must not have received
compensation for
handling for one full year preceding the Amateur Date.
