I believe that most of us have at one time or another considered a central
location for our National and the points you made were all noteworthy, Tom
and Dave. It certainly would eliminate the yearly guessing game, the endless
search for a place adequate for all venues that our dogs can participate in.

I must say, however, that I never would have been able to see those
beautiful parts of our country in which the National has been taken place.
That definitely was a new adventure for me. Although some agree that my
traveling plans should have nothing to do with this special event it
certainly seemed a great idea to combine these together.
Yes, the possibility of having our own site does have its merits and I would
be very willing to accept such a plan, should it ever be reality.

Terry -- I am going to respectfully disagree with you on your resistance
to having the National in one location every year. I think it would be a
great idea, and I think it could be a significant help in revitalizing
interest in GSD conformation showing. Things are never again going to be
like they once were in terms of numbers, but that doesn't mean that a
significant revitalization isn't possible, indeed even likely if some
leaders with vision take charge. The overall quality of dogs at the National

is, in my opinion, very good. I think that a central location would help the

numbers to start increasing. Dave Rinke makes some excellent points in
regards to the efficacy of having the National at the same location and the
same time every year. Everyone needs to go to the GSDC of A website and read

his interview in its entirety if you haven't already. I won't entirely
rehash the points that he made so well, but a few highlight advantages of
one-site, same time each year are:
----- Ease of travel. It has gotten extremely difficult and sometimes
impossible to fly dogs to many areas. The right location would help in this
regard. Also, larger numbers would be likely to drive to a location
centrally located.
----- Quality of site. Perhaps THE major issue. A National with serious
site problems is a bummer.
-----Ease of planning for exhibitors and spectators. Wouldn't it be great
to know the exact dates of the National were going to be constant or close
to constant and it was always going to be in the same place? You could plan
your hotel, restaurants, etc. and know what you were getting.
----- The most advantages for the most members. We need to get away from the

"its our turn" mentality when locating the National, and think instead about

what is best for the whole club and the largest number of members and
exhibitors.
We're very fortunate to have plenty of Wise Old Owls in our breed.
I'm confident that if they start putting their heads together with some
sense of urgency and with steady input from the membership that better days
can lie ahead. I hope that our new Board can demonstrate skillful leadership

in this matter.. The National issue has been hashed and rehashed a million
times. I think that what we need now is intense effort and mindful,
visionary action.
