In the late 1960s the initial list of judges for the membership to vote on
was compiled by a committee selected by the board. I served on that committee
several years. The committee members would have liked to have added Lang
Skarda to the list so that the membership would have an opportunity to vote
for
him or not. Lang was a popular judge, and though not yet an All Breed
Judge, he did have most of the Groups and was in high demand, probably judging
most weekends. He declined to sign the agreement which would have restricted
the time before the National during which he could judge Shepherds, because
this was a matter he would have to negotiate with clubs that had already hired
him to judge, perhaps on the assumption that would judge Shepherds. Also, in
taking future assignments, he would have to exclude Shepherds while not
knowing if he would be elected by the membership to judge the National.
I think that, in setting up the restrictions it was assumed that the
candidates would be judges that only judged shepherds and would be judging
largely
at specialties, and that if they judged in the locale of the National people
would go to get a less expensive shot to see if the judge liked their dog or
not and thereby save the cost of showing at the National if the result was
negative.

Whatever was the motive in setting up the procedure, the result was to
deprive the membership of the opportunity to select a respected judge who had
owned and handled a Grand Victor.

If you remember it was the GSDCA that made that rule in the 70's & 80's at

the "forceful " request of the AKC. It was in the judging contract ,just
like the temperament test requirement, that a judge that was nominated had
to
sign--if he got the Intersex assignment, they could not see the other
judging. . How would the members feel about that now ?? Helen Miller

It is a dumb rule How can watching any part of the show compromise the
intersex judge even the ones he/she will then judge. Even if he/she saw the
dog or
puppy they thought they liked from the stands when they then got in the ring

and saw it different they would go with the one they liked up close.
