Hi everyone: the other day, a friend and I were discussing stud dogs and having them OFA certified. Then this morning another breeder wrote to me about this very same subject and asked if I would write about it. Just what responsibility does a stud dog owner owe to the public when he offers his dog for stud? Do you think he should be OFA certified or have the equivalent from another institution? How important is this to you when you breed your bitch.....do you look for a dog that is certified BOTH hips and elbows? Would you breed to a dog who is not? I remember the great Joan Ford wrote in the Redbook that GV Mannix had one hip that was not as good as the other. I applaud her honesty. So there you have it......do you think seeing those numbers at the end of a dogs pedigree adds to his desirability's, his credibilities as a dog someone would want to utilize in their breeding program? Is a dog who does not have this certification eliminated from your future breeding program?
