Thanks everyone for your responses to this question....and because I've been
asked by a few people post to the list, here is the general consensus....
Puppies are not sold before 8 weeks with 10 weeks running a close second
Show picks are made at birth by some which makes selling the pets easier,
but 8 weeks seems to be when most picks even for show are made. There is also
some discussion as to what constitutes a show puppy verses a puppy with
potential but that's for another email.
Most people let Pet buyers pick their puppy though always offer advice on
the best choice for them.
Methods of advertising is usually word of mouth or websites.
Buyers can see the puppies at 6 to 8 weeks depending on when first shots are
given.
Surprising to me, but most people register the entire litter then transfer
registration to the new owner. Others (myself included) have clauses in their
contract that require their kennel name is used in the name or all guarantees
are void.
Refunding deposits run about 50/50...some do... some don't...though many say
they won't refund the deposit but ultimately do because they don't want their
puppy going to home where it's not wanted.
Thanks again for all the responses. Unfortunately for me there appears to be
no magic bullet that eases the pain of selling puppies....my least favorite
thing about breeding.
