I apologize to those who have been emailing me about our shows this year. I have been waiting, thinking that 'tomorrow' we would be able to book a park. Here's the situation..... We do have judges..... But we are out of time.... Past this point we will not be able to get our shows approved, and do the necessary things to make it fly. I have visited every park in the valley, including schools, sports complexes, private parks, front lawns and gravel pits. I did draw an arbitrary line at $1,000.00 as too much money for our club. The Lawlor Events Center is rentable at about $8,000 a day - we passed. The fair grounds arena is available at less than half that - still pass - and neither have grass. Parks in the valley are basically divided into two types - 1. Regional parks that are there for the general public and, 2. Neighborhood parks that are usually built by developers for the neighborhoods immediately surrounding the park. Neighborhood parks may not be reserved. Area parks may be reserved, with certain restrictions. Our county has two dog parks, and they will reserve a park of them for us, but they are basically fields with no grass at one and poor grass at the other and it is without shade, picnic facilities, water or power. Additionally, although we can have an area of the park, it must still be accessable to the other dogs who come there and romp playfully together off lead. Ya - that will work???? So scratch the county. The City of Reno has one park with enough clear grass to accomodate our ring - but that area is on a ball field and may not be used by dogs. The City of Sparks is closing our regular park - Rock Park at the river, to convert it into a Kiack park and water park. Renovations begin Aug. 1st. They have one other park that is usable ut it is booked for a wedding and reception. Sports complexes are used every weekend by organized sports leagues and soccor has now started. Sorry to be so detailed, but I usually get suggestions about things I certainly have not thought of, and that is no doubt true, but given the things that I have thought of, I've struck out. With only a month to go - We have decided to not have a show this year. I am so very sorry for this inconvenience to the many who have been so faithful in supporting our show and allowing us to enjoy their presence here. I've put in a lot of time trying to resolve this and met with each jurisdictions department heads and been assured of their support, but within the policies they are given. On a personal note, several have suggested that we not have a show in deferance to our concern for Linda's physical condition. That has not precluded our attempting to find a place, but it has preoccupied a lot of time and concern. Linda is not well and is seeing a variety of specialists weekly. Her symptoms are of a heart attack - shortness of breath, chest pain, pain down her left arm, passing out. She cannot walk from the bedroom to the bathroom without panting and, on occasion loosing consciousness. She has been in and out of the hospital and had more tests than I thought existed. None of those tests confirm a heart attack. She has been screened for cancer, lung problems, GI problems and Wed. will go for a brain scan. She believes they will find nothing (her humor is still good), but at this point we simply do not know. In the mean time, she is not supposed to drive, spends much of her time in bed and is of major concern to me and the rest of the family. That doesn't preclude our having a show, but it does add a dimension of concern that puts some limits on my time and energy in pushing through the barriers that we have encountered. So, NO SHOW THIS YEAR! I will write a follow-up post about what our plans are for the future..... Give me a minute or two.
