COMMENTS: Re Jim's statement, " the original GSDCA Standard from 1928 was based on a point system, 100 points allotted, NOT ONE single point allotted for gait" Fact: The original GSDCA Standard was written by Anne Tracey (Eristoff)) in 1912 ( NOT 1928) prior to utilization of it during the formation of the GSDCA in 1913. (Anne Tracey was one of the 7 founding members and one of the first GSDCA Presidents) The original Standard's first page DID indeed list a German type 100 point system , BUT was followed on subsequent pages by detailed Paragraphs with specific headings ( including GAIT) describing in detail the virtues required of the German Shepherd Dog. Quote: " GAIT --- when running the legs should move evenly and in harmony with each other and with the back. The strides should be long and elastic, lifting the feet only just clear of the ground. The higher he lifts his feet, the lower his speed. " Re whites " doubt it really presents problem for GSD's" Fact : Whites and off colors (blues , livers, paling colors) DID present a growing problem against preserving the integrity of the GSD Breed and directly resulted In the creation of the present Standard.!! With a permissive 1943 Standard that stated ONLY that washed out colors were " not preferred" and " white dogs are not desirable" and were to be DQ'd only " if showing albino characteristics", the mismatched and indiscriminate breeding of colors pro-ported to be "unusual" and "rare" were all too frequent. Popularity of the GSD was extremely high at that time, and puppy mills rampant, with little or no attention to preservation of character and breed type. Litters of blues , pale looking brown pups, whites with tan and lack mantels , were hawked to an unsuspecting and gullible public at prices hundreds of dollars more than " a mere black and tan" puppy. I am familiar with these situations, as my first GSD pup was purchased in 1957 , and thank goodness I was steered clear of these disasters. ($50 for my pet pup sired by Ch Llano Estacados Fernando) The defense against this destruction was to create a breed Standard with teeth. The 1968 Standard of today took from 1959 to1968 to craft with COMBINED GSDCA Boards AND MEMBERSHIP Input, documented in Minutes and Presidents Reports appearing in the GS Dog Review in those years. It is interesting to see that some want HISTORY TO REPEAT ITSELF, which is certainly evident in the parallel wording of the 1943 Standard and the "revised GSD Standard " > > > >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> > ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2014.
