I've done quite a bit of research on this subject and have found that at
times, hip or elbow injuries are very difficult to diagnose from true
inherited ED or HD. Even the best Radiologists have a hard time
differentiating between the two.

Here is a little story about OFA, hips, and vets. A dog of my breeding was
xrayed by his owner, (he had been very lame in the rear), and told by the
vet
that he was severely dysplastic, and said only surgery would save him. My
darling friend, who is a fireman, and very much into his dogs, and into
saving
lives, dutifully took the dog to a canine orthodedic surgeon. This vet
looked
at him, and agreed that he was indeed lame, but that he didn't think it was
his hips that were causing it. Sure enough, it was a torn anterior
ligament.
He x-rayed the hips also, and agreed they were terrible, but again, he did
not
feel they were the immediate problem. They did the surgery, which was very
successful, but my friend insisted that the hip x rays be sent to OFA, in
spite of the surgeon's reluctance, noting that the dog was neutered, and why
should the owner spend extra money...etc etc... the x rays went to the OFA
never
the less, and came back OFA GOOD.
