Our club (GSDC of So. AZ) is trying to do just that, still need approval for
the 3rd day. It obviously draws more people and this way we will regain our
solid majors once again. However, we will still have one show per day. Our
show chair, Dianna Van Erem, is feverishly working on all of this. I am glad
I am not a show chair. It's not an easy job.

This causes me to bring up something I already have in the past.......and
like Christine I'm not sure
anything will change one iota........but I just gotta say.....especially
after Tom brings up the cost and
what is causing some of us to leave the Conformation shows and just stay
home.

The new Review has an advertisement on Page 2 that I think a few show giving
Clubs should look
at and give some real thought to.
What a great idea!! YEP......I'm talking multiple show weekends again!!
THESE Clubs are really thinking outside the box......and cause an Exhibitor
to really give it some
thought! Even though it is a long ways away it makes it more of a 'worth
the chance' long trip.
<G>
A Specialty show Friday afternoon ( allowing late or early arrivals to get
one show in ) ......two shows
on Saturday...allowing the "possibility" of two majors....and a show Sunday
morning ( allowing long
distance travelers time to get 'on the road' early ) NOW THIS IS
INNOTIVE THINKING!!

Possibility of four wins in one weekend.....ONE trip....less Motel
time......less weekends away from
home....( for exhibitor AND handler ) and the show is right AT the Hotel
site.........and a panel of
judges that goes together well.
These kind of show weekends gives exhibitors more time to stay at home to
join Tom in sitting in the
sun looking at good dogs!! <G>

KUDOS to this Texas weekend!!

I've been in the forest for quite awhile, and when I got back I saw
Christine's email "Throwing in the towel...". I enjoy reading what she
writes because she's always thoughtful and flinty. I find myself basically
in agreement with her takes, but view The Decline and Fall of the American
GSD Empire from a slightly different angle. I've always done my level best
to be non-controversial in all opinions, nonetheless my takes here may not
all find universal acceptance. Be that as it may, I think that if you "know
the dogs", and you want to continue showing in conformation, things have
evolved to the point where you either show at specialties and go broke or
show at all-breeds and go crazy. If you stay at a motel and show one dog at
a typical two show specialty weekend, and you use a top handler (pretty
much required if you plan on winning much), you're going to drop say 600
bucks or so. If it's a cluster, much more. So if you have a good one and
he/she finishes in a grand
 to
tal of 20 weekends starting from puppy through open and maybe a couple
special outings..... not cheap. Not to mention futurities and nationals.
Much higher. And when you finish that one you get to start another ! The
average Joe's that I know can't afford that on a regular basis. And if
you're a senior on fixed income, forggettaboutit. You can probably cut costs
by doing local all-breeds, but then you're eventually going to have to
factor in the inevitable costs of psychiatric care.
The other reality is, things change. That includes everything
except...nothing. Norma said it well. I'm not sure who it was that observed
that when he looked up into the stands
at the Beaumont National, it looked like they'd emptied out all the local
retirement homes to give the seniors a pleasant outing. Cracked me up, and I
was one of them. There really aren't very many new conformation GSD
people. The economy, costs, politics, inevitable shifting interests, etc.
Lots of reasons why things have changed, so I think it's pointless and
ultimately probably fruitless to think it can be reversed. It just is as it
is. I still like reading the List though, and sitting in the sun looking at
dogs, even if just a few.
Christine, you're brilliant, and Norma, I'm with you, so.....
  I'll lurk now.
