Most horses (in my considerable experience and from extensive reading) colic from impaction. The gut slows down, and the food "packs" up. The first thing the vets do is listen for peristaltic sounds. If there are none, the colic is caused by an impaction. That is why they give them oil...and other things to "get the gut moving".
