Though there wouldn't be stomach acids present, the stomach doesn't empty
for 6-8 hours. Even with stomach acids present, the kibble in question
still swells (to its maximum) as it would mixed in a bowl of water.
Grain-in foods (especially rice varieties) swell to many times their dry
kibble state. The bloat surgeries I have participated in amazed me with
how much kibble swelled and then the addition of gasses upon that! Even
with a dog being 4-6 hours out from the last meal before bloating, many
many cups of (then well moistened and mushy from stomach acids) food are
still present. FYI all the bloat surgeries I have helped with were dogs fed
grain-in kibble for whatever reason.
I have done the experiment with grain-free varieties and did notice the
volume increase wasn't as great.
Dogs fed fresh foods don't have any volume expansion at all, the contents
just turn to slush; or, in the case of insoluble fibers, those don't digest
much at all until hitting the intestines.
On a last note, I know there are many people who yet feed their dogs from
elevated bowls. The science says (clinical trials) that floor feeding is
actually better (and the natural way for the dog to eat). For those who
have worries about bloat, or bloat in their lines, the best thing is to
feed pre-expanded kibble with a good quality probiotic added each day. Gut
microbe health plays a major part in gas production, or the lack thereof.
(The Great Dane study showed that the gut microbiome also played a part in
the incidence of bloat/volvulus in addition to certain genes being a risk
factor)
Jen P & her Pack who agree-- definitely one should not drink cola (nor any
soda!) nor eat nails either! The science experiment we did was pouring 1
tablespoon of cola (Coke & Pepsi) each onto a steak to see what happened,
and to guess which was more caustic to muscle tissue.... Any guesses which
is actually harder on the body?

I remember hearing about putting a nail in coke and watching what happens
in a day. I guess that means people should not drink coke or eat nails.
The other problem I have with the experiment is how many dogs after an
hour have no digestion or passage of food from the stomach, (glass bowl)?
While I appreciate that Ed thinks feeding raw is the answer to all our
problems, I agree it has some merit, but I also applaud the work done by
the industry to supply safe and proper food for the industry.
I also believe our dogs live longer than they did in the wild, but then
again, my dogs never lived in the wild.

it in the " Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association " . The
study pointed to kibble as a significant factor with the increased risk of
GDV; kibble increases fermentation of food in the stomach causing the risk

this experiment. Get a large glass or metal bowl, put two cups of your
favorite kibble, fill the bowl with water... Wait an hour and see what
happens...... Now do the same thing but this time replace the kibble and
use three pieces of raw chicken.....I have another experiment but most
