Julie,

While I agree that the beginning level rally is very simple, the middle
and upper levels are much more on a par with a CD. There are many
exercises in Rally that are different from regular obedience. Some of
them can be difficult to perform.

Also, Rally makes much more sense to beginning people than does Novice
Obedience. It is much more like real life. In real life, you don't
just give a single command to your dog (unless you are already competing
in obedience). It will, hopefully, get people hooked who will then go
on to regular obedience.

Subject: Rally titles

I completely agree with Susan when she says that Rally should NOT be
considered a dual title. Although you can earn titles in Rally, I
believe it is
more on a par with a CGC than it is with other beginning level working
titles.
I have several friends that showed in Rally this past weekend and most
came
away with a new title (even on a 7 month old elkhound puppy with
minimal
training). All of my friends competing in Rally do other things with
their dogs
as well and the Rally is more of a "warm up".

I was on the AKC obedience delegates commitee when Rally was
developed. It
is considered a stepping stone between CGC and either agility or
obedience.
It was developed so people would train thier agility dogs a little
more and
the people showing in obedience would get a more positive foundation
on their
dogs. It is als a very supportive way to start a dog exposing him to
ring
conditions. It should NOT be considered a replacement for either, nor
should
it be considered a title for a duel award or an AOE. IT IS TOO EASY
TO BE
CONDSIDERED A WORKING TITLE. However that doens't mean that it isn't
fun or you
shouldn't do it, as it has excellent purpose and will be fun for both
you
and your dog. I hope that it will be a money maker for clubs as it
moves
faster than obedience and should increase your entries. Hopefully once
exhibitors
compete in rally they will go on into agility or obedience or both.
