It has taken my a few days to be able to write about the loss of our beloved
Sassy. The cancer she has been fighting finally got the better of her and we
had to make that final decision last Thursday. We (as well as Dr. Todd) felt
she was relieved. We had her up to 11 pills a day and then the tumor grew
inside to the point of cutting off the circulation to her right hind leg.
Enough was enough!
A few things about this wonderful girl we got from Scootie Sherlock and Gail
Peikert at 11 weeks old. Scootie told me she was one of the most correct
bitches she had ever seen and we tried showing her but she disliked it so much
that she pinned her ears back in the ring and there was no getting them up.
However, she did love obedience and got her CD title at the young age of 12
mths. We were working on her next challenge and making great progress when I
got her OFA certificate and decided to breed her. When we went back to
training, she did everything - jumps, retrieval, etc. but she decided I
couldn't go out of sight anymore on the sits and downs. I'd get half way
across the field and next thing she'd be right behind me.
Well, even though we never achieved another title she could still go through
all her routines right up through last summer when she was over 12 yrs. old.
She had the greatest spirit and intelligence of any of these wonderful animals
I've had the honor of owning and/or breeding. We know she understood english
and everything that was said around here. She indeed was boss of the house as
well as the kennel and everyone in the "pack" got in line behind that.
We will miss our girl tremendously but are fortunate enough to have had her for
over 12 1/2 yrs. unlike so many I see going at such young ages. Just enjoy
each day with your fur kids and give them hugs. That will lessen the burden
once they are gone.
Dee and Joe
