That is the dumbest argument I have ever heard.? A Rabies Titers costs about
$170.00 in Los Angeles.? A rabies shot costs about $20.00.? So, it seems to me,
that the folks who will spend the money on a titers, do not have dogs in which
JQP needs to worry.? I would seriously like to know the precentage of animal
bite incidents in which the dog had a titers and not a current rabies vaccine.?
I would bet the percentage would be close to zero.? The CDC needs to?get wake
up call about reality.? They have more important things to worry about rather
than a?titered dog being infectious.? Geesh!

There is a difference in the vaccines but it has nothing to do with the fluid
in
the syringe. It actually has to do with the efficacy/challenge studies
conducted on the vaccine prior to FDA approval. The vaccine is 'tested' by
maintaining a group of animals for a period of years, periodic titer testing,
and 'challenging' immunity by injecting the animals with live virus to see how
effective the vaccine is. There is a 10 year study going on now...... Several
companies have released vaccines for three year that vets purchase for one year
vaccines for their clients. The difference in cost per injection is 10 CENTS
give or take. The rabies vaccines themselves are somewhere between .85 and
1.05
per dose. And we pay what???????
The CDC is generally the group that writes the requirements for most rabies
laws/programs/administrative rules. If we really wanted to get something
changed the key would be to ask the CDC to make the necessary changes to the
Rabies Compendium based on current research. The Compendium currently states
'Rabies titers MAY NOT be used in lieu of current vaccine." So, even though we
know that our dogs are protected.... the CDC, who is responsible for human
health, does not know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the human bite victim is
safe from transmission of a fatal disease.
