Rabies is a real issue here in the Upstate of South Carolina - my small town vet (Pelzer, SC) has several dogs in quarantine and there are two show/breeder kennels (not GSD) that are under quarantine - no breeding, no showing, no buying and no selling of any dog . . . A local breeder had a sick puppy (about 4 wks old) and took it to my vet - they treated but pup kept getting worse and then died, they did an autopsy and the pup had rabies - the whole litter had to be put down and three others (of 8) also had rabies - so weather or not they needed it - all of mine have had rabies shots - it's better that rabies and/or the fines that go with getting caught without them . . .
