Dear List Members:
As you can see from the below, the AOL problems continue. Below is the
latest report from the Showgsd-l server of List members' addresses that were
or are bouncing. Not all of them are AOL addresses, but the majority are.
When the report says "host", that means that your server, the Host server,
is rejecting the posts, not that your mailbox is full/ Because there are so
many AOL people on Showgsd-l when it starts bouncing posts, that presents a
huge problem for our server, because when 1 post goes out to the List, and
then for example 50 addresses are bouncing, that 1 post results in 50
bounces back to the server. If there are 10 posts that bounce to 50
addresses, that results in 500 bounces. Considering the level of activity
on Showgsd-l, if you do the math you can appreciate how quickly the bounces
becomes a huge problem for the server, resulting in slowdowns, and
potentially a complete server crash. So, the server is set to set addresses
to Vacation if there are more than 5 bounces within a 24 hour period.
Every time I post the Bounce Report, I get emails from people who say they
are getting their List mail, so don't understand why they are on the Report.
The reason for this is that it is not unusual for your server to have
issues, and to bounce SOME incoming mail but not all. I have been having
this same problem myself on Bellsouth. So, while you get SOME of the mail
sent to you, you don't get it all, and may not realize you are bouncing,
since it is impossible to know what you DON'T get.
Once the bouncing stops, any time you need to, if this happens, you can
restart your mail by unsetting vacation. The way to do this is to:
send email to: showgsd-l-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx (please use this EXACT
address - it is different than the normal address for the List).
with the following message: unset vacation
That should get it started again, so long as your server is no longer
bouncing incoming posts.
What we have been seeing recently with AOL is a lot of sporadic, recurring
bouncing. Perhaps they are having capacity issues, lots of new people who
got computers for the holidays. It is hard to tell exactly why, what we see
at our end is the effect. However, you have the ability to restart your
mail, so long as your server is functional, bu unsetting vacation as
described above.
There is an Archive on the web site that contains all List posts, so you can
go there to read whatever you missed by being shut off. However, please
remember that the archives are password protected, for MEMBERS ONLY. Please
do not give your passwords to ANYONE, even other List members.

NOTE: This list is configured so users who would
be Unsub'd will be set VACATION instead.
Expired - User has not had a bounce for 1 days,
watch has been expired.
Admin - User is administrator, no action taken.
Protect - User is flagged PROTECTED, no action taken.
Manual - There was no default action taken, handle manually.
NotSub - Bounce message received for user not subscribed
to this list. This is caused when someone is
forwarding to another address and their mailserver
reports the wrong one, or if someone has been
unsubscribed from the list but not expired from
the watches yet.
