Bob, it's not the AKC to look out for ~ before you think about holding papers, check the "puppy lemon laws" in your particular state. For instance in PA, we have 30 days to furnish registration papers. Fail to do so and there are fines, refund of purchase price, (and they keep the puppy) etc. Besides, holding the AKC papers doesn't mean a dog can't reproduce, and if you're dealing w/ companion dog owners, there are plenty of other registries that will register their dogs if they go that route.
