  Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Questions about puppies....

I have a couple of questions about my litter:
  1) they have been eating puppy "mush" (soaked puppy food) for the past three
weeks - when can I start giving it to them dry? Mama is pretty much done with
them and they have been eating two to three meals a day, and drinking water on
their own for the past couple of days.
I blenderize my dry and add it to their soaked puppy food, a small amout each
day. By the time the pups are 6 weeks old, they are on 70% kibble and 30%
puppy mush...which mine is tripe and beef n bone mixed with warm water. If
your pups are 7 weeks old, you still need to introduce the kibble slowly.

  2) When and/or at what age do you evaluate puppies? I don't know what to
think of this litter - I am going to have a really HARD HARD time figuring out
who the pick male is - there are three boys who are very close - all nice
movers and nice toplines, etc. I have been video taping them just about weekly
for the past few weeks. When do you do the "hard core" evaluating? At this
age (they will be 7 weeks tomorrow) what exactly am I looking for, and what
should I be watching for over the next several weeks? I have been told that
what a puppy has at 8 weeks will be what it has when it is an adult - does this
hold true? Since this is my first litter, I have never had puppies to look at
this young.....oh what I would give for some experience here!! LOL!!
Wow, these guys are 7 weeks .. you might of missed the best time to evaluate
first...now take and wait until 9 weeks. That is the next best time after 5
/12 weeks. Did you Temperament test them? Can you weed out the top picks on
Temperament? Then we evaluate again at 11 weeks. So it is 5, 9, and 11
weeks. I picked out Ruby at 11 weeks...she didn't have alot of topline...but
shoulder and type were there. My stuff all gets topline back at 9 mths ....
long wait..but worth it.
