Some may produce congenital mega more or less frequently than others, but I
agree that both parents have to be carriers. I've heard folks "blame" the
line of whichever parent they don't own <g> but they are in denial, and if
bred enough, time will prove both are carriers to be true.
Knock on wood, I haven't had a mega in several years now but I experienced a
few 6-7 years ago after I bred into a certain line. I had no mega's in the
first generation, so believe my bitch was not a carrier, but one of the
second generation produced mega occasionally.
Mega is a "breeders problem" that I despise. I refuse to knowingly breed
two dogs "together" who have already both produced mega OR if both had
littermates who were mega's. This seems to have helped me breed away from
mega or at least reduce the risk, without throwing the baby out with the
bathwater. Only time will tell.
