Hi All - Is it known whether the progesterone deficiency is hereditary?
Years ago, we had trouble with bitches resorbing puppies - this culminated
in Our TOP show bitch repeatedly resorbing. Palpation would show puppies,
but two/three weeks later she would be empty. Finally, I took her to a
reproductive specialist for progesterone test, she was deficient. He
started her on progesterone injections - weekly - for the remainder of her
term - EXCEPT - he discontinued them on the 49th day. Three days later she
aborted. He said it was one week too early, that he had miscalculated. We
decided to discard her from the breeding program, and have discarded any
bitch which resorbs since that time. We no longer have that problem. It
seems to me that artificial maintenance of the progesterone level during
pregnancy is just a crutch, and probably works to the detriment of the
breed.
