I assist a local Vet's wife with her Puppy Playschool class every Saturday. When she is unable to hold it I usually do it in her place. It is the neatest thing to see all these different breeds playing and learning together. They get socialized with the other dogs and the people. We introduce them to basic obedience (sit, down, come). We teach social handling-touching each paw, looking in the mouth and ears, and hugging-to try to get them used to being handled by strangers in case god forbid they need to go to the vet for an emergency. We also teach the owners how to cut nails. We teach some agility-tunnels, A-frame, the collapsed tunnel.no jumping or dog walk-the A-frame is lowered to the ground. We do teach the feel of different surfaces-we have a boogie (spelling) board and then we take planks and put them up against tables and have them walk up and down. We also put a ladder on the ground and have them walk between the rungs to get them used to using those back legs. Similar to that we put jump poles on the ground and have them walk between those. We require that the puppies be under 6 months old and have at least 3 parvo distemper shots before we allow them in the yard. It is just great to see these puppies playing and learning. We bought a 10 month old GSD and when we got her home she was fine with Bob and I. Then I took her to Puppy Manners class and she wouldn't go near anyone or even play with the puppies. So we kept going (it is a 6 week class) and I also took her to Puppy Play School. We did not do any type of training.we concentrated on socialization. By the end of that 6 week class she was leading the pack of puppies in the games. She was still a little standoffish with people, but now she is just fantastic with other dogs and people. I'm very pleased we were able to turn her around.some of them you can't. I am a firm believer in getting them into any kind of play school, puppy manors class, etc., that you can. The City of Alamogordo also recently put in a dog park and I heard about it from some of the play school students. I too feel like a lot of you do and am hesitant about taking my dogs there.however, these people enjoy it. I guess what I'm saying as for the puppy classes, you just have to ensure you go to someone reputable and be aware of your surroundings while you are there. I guess the same would go for the dog park.be aware of your surroundings. BTW Bob had done up an article on Puppy Play School about a year ago and sent it in to the Review with pictures, but it did not get published.I think I will have him send it again. Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season. Our thoughts and prayers are with Evan too. - Elaine George Enchanted Vista, Home of: Ch Rocknoll Ajax Nike Clayfield CD, Alkay's Black Velvet, Jerrwen's Southern Belle, and Ch Jerrwen's Georgiana HIC ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2006.
