These are 12 week old puppies - first was female, started with clear vomit,
went off food, wouldn't drink, progressed to shooting diarrhea with lots of
mucus, then to bloody diarrhea, then died - all within less than 24 hours.
From the time diarrhea started to the time she died was between 8-10 hours.
Vet thought parvo initially, but decided against that now. Same thing started
with male puppy from same litter - progressed the same, died within less than
24 hours, same time frame for diarrhea to dying. Third pup continues to hang
on but looks like it won't make it. Vet is continuing to look for the cause of
these deaths but nothing conclusive has been discovered. This has all happened
within the course of 3 days (Wed to today). All of these pups have had the
standard series of vaxes and have been well taken care of, 99% certain they
have not been exposed to anything out of the ordinary - they have been in no
public dog areas and have not left the premisis. Vet school has dead female
and necropsy in progress, so far shows white blood cell count fairly normal,
red blood cell count low, phospherous count was "off the chart" high (however
this could be due to organ shut-down prior to death). Everything else was
unremarkable. Variety of antibiotics have been tried with the initial thought
that this was some type of intestinal issue, but nothing has worked. Pups were
not given any canned/soft foods, no treats, no access to run/roam other than in
the yard, and are in an enclosed area when not out in the yard, the entire area
is kept very clean, the food they have been fed has been also fed to adults
(out of the same bag) and the adults are all fine. Clostridium has been
mentioned because of the bloody diarrhea, but nothing conclusive yet. Racking
our brains trying to figure out what's going on here. NEED IDEAS - anyone have
any ideas or suggestions on what to do for tests, what to look at, etc? Thanks
for any help here.
