I always tell people to put the prong collar on their own arm and see who it feels, then put the choke collar around their own neck pull sharply and then tell me which one is more scary. Trust me the pinch is much more humane then the chock collar. Most people's timing is so bad with the chock collar they should not be allowed to use one. The pinch is power stirring for the dog. They self correct and both owner and dog are much happier. I have 4 dogs with me at all times. All of them were trained on a pinch. Most of the time they don't wear any collar at all. Here in the woods they could get caught up in the brush if they wore a choker they could kill themselves. They all can do a drop on recall and I can get them to do a very nice recall off a deer in flight. Victor has never been seriously trained to do anything but he is just a goofy boy who really wants to please the mom. Now for today's walk in the woods. I saw a huge coyote fishing for Kokanee today.I wonder why they can eat the fish not not get sick. Victor ate one and was very ill for a month. The coyotes here are as big as the GSD's It makes you wonder if the are dog crosses. The eagles have been fishing right in front of the cabin but we can tell they are moving up stream. The vine maple is in full glory now and the dog wood is bright pink. The sky here is so very very blue. The full moon at night shines through the tall timber and makes the Metolius river look like liquid silver. Only the constant roar of the water flow lets you know it is still the mighty river that is has always been. The public views the prong collar as abusive and scary. They see the dog that needs it as dangerous. When I was did the "public education" part of a Paws in the Park" a coupleof years ago, I was asked not to bring the prong collars as part of my collar display. (I have nylon collars, flat collars, halti's, martingales, chain collars, fur savers and others in my collection) The reasoning was that (as above) they are viewed as abusive. At some AKC events they aren't allowed on grounds by entrants. Not in the ring, on the grounds. As Laura said, any training method CAn be abusive. I have seen some abuse in the ring by handlers with the choke collar, the dog jerked so fiercely that the dog was jerked up and back off the ground. That to me is abusive.
