If it was big and had tufts where the ears should be, it was probably a great horned owl. Screech owls are actually pretty small. All owls can screech in an awful manner...most of them can "hoo hoo hoo," but for the most part, they're silent......altho sometimes, if it's really quiet, you can hear the wings moving the air when the great horned owl flies over your head...... A great horned owl can carry off a good sized puppy., and yes, they CAN and DO fight with other birds, esp. over meat........ Owls usually only HUNT at night, but they are out and about at dawn and dusk...that's usually when you can hear them, and you might see one on its way back to its nest at dawn, or on the way to a good hunting ground if it's dusk...but they really do their best hunting at night. If you see an owl carrying something off from your yard during the day, that's going to be a 1 in a million sighting......... We have owls and hawks here, herons, eagles, all sorts of birds.......and probably coyotes a little further out. After all, there are black bears living in northern virginia all around Dulles airport.... most people really have no idea of the kind of wildlife around them. There are birds of prey living in the heart of Manhattan and Washington, DC, too... just that most people don't notice.
