Another fact though is that Opossums getting rabies is EXTREMELY rare.
Their body temperature is too low to harbor the rabies virus.
Cleanliness is next to opossumness
Many people consider the opossum a filthy animal, in part because of his
mousy gray coat but also because he's often seen foraging through trash cans
and is known to eat carrion. In truth, however, the opossum is one of the
cleanest animals around. They groom and bathe themselves meticulously, as
scrupulously as the most finicky house cat, and have even been observed to
stop in the midst of eating to clean themselves several times before
finishing. The only thing he's missing is a dinner napkin! (taken from a

Not too too gentle always tho! I saw one kill a kitten once! Have no idea
about the golf course stuff!
La. is different I'm sure with "laws" but I'm not involved! They do have a
short life span!
I will never forget, too bad my house burned and some fabulous pictures
burned. I man brought 2
tiny ones and one of my cats accepted them. Oddly, the same cat was given 2
orphan baby foxes
to raise as well. It was so neat as she taught them to use the litter box.
However, as they all got
a bit older and were close to weaning age, the possums started riding on the
cat like they do their
marsupial real Mom. I hadn't thought about it, but apparently they fell off
and away they went.
The foxes were fabulous though. My Troll son was out having a run on the
farm with me one day
and I saw him run over to the edge of the woods jump in and a fussing ensued
and as I approached
he'd grabbed this possum and it was not playing possum, he'd done it in
mighty fast, yuck. Norma

Possums facts are:
1. Very gentle until frightened (like any animal)
2. They do not attack other animals
3. Golf courses love to have them around
4. It is illegal (at least in Calif) to kill them. They are protected
by law. It is illegal to even move them to different locations.
but I used to take them to a golf course that had a lake.
5. They die of old age at 2 years old.
6. They make good pets. Betty White had one as a pet.
7. No need to be afraid of one gentle little guy.
