I heard today that the state of Missouri has filed felony animal abuse, and cruelty charges against the handler who allowed ten showdogs to die from the heat while in her care. The incident happened on August 10th., one of the record hot days here this summer. I was told that the handler's assets are "frozen," and she is not allowed to show, sell, give away, or breed any dogs owned or co-owned by herself, pending the outcome of the trial. The case is set for April, 2007. The dogs, mostly Australian Shepherds, died in Cass County, south of Kansas City, which is where several Civil suits have already been heard, and where the felony abuse case will be tried. Though the dogs who died were not German Shepherds, it will be interesting to me to see how this case turns out. If it serves no purpose other than to make handlers more careful while going to shows during the hottest months of the year, then perhaps these dogs will not have died in vain.
