There was an article in the newspaper today about Dax, the German
Shepherd Dog. You may have seen him appearing in TV shows "Rescue 911"
and "America's Greatest Pets". Dax was awarded the Scarlet Shield, a
medal of merit given to officers injured in the line of duty.
Dax had saved his partner's life when he was shot on patrol, but
recovered to eventually go back on duty. Just a few years ago he was
retired and lived the easy life with his partner's family.
This shooting incident inspired a young man (9 years old) to collect
enough money and buy bullet-proof vests for all the canines at the Tucson
Police Department. Now he is working to do the same for the Phoenix
Canine Unit.
Dax was plagued by arthritis a great deal in his later years and almost
died from a liver infection. Last night Dax was put to rest at 12 1/2
years of age. A perfect example of an outstanding GSD.
